Those who suffer in love are, as it is said of certain invalids, their own doctors. Since no consolation can come to them but from the cause of their pain, they finally find a remedy in the pain itself. As they examine their suffering, they discover another aspect of the beloved, which may be so hateful that they do not even wish to see her, or on the contrary, so sweet that the kindness they impute to her becomes one of her real attributes and a source of hope.
